Each chapter adds more features and capabilities as well as teaching you more about Android development. Downloading the source code is a must. The early chapters have a lot of detail around writing code but as you progress through the book you will find they only focus on the core changes to the application. Not having the source code makes it a bit difficult to understand how some of the pieces fit together.

The approach t One thing I like best about this book is the creation of an application. The approach they take for developing an application that will eventually connect to an application server was useful. They take you through how to create mock data sourced by XML files which are identical to the XML files to be accessed from a server.

This approach allows you to build up the application without having to worry about connectivity development in the beginning. I highly recommend working through the exercises. They reinforce what has been learned in the chapter and also force you to think about Android development rather than just follow someone's instructions. I would recommend and it provided me a good basis for understanding how to structure an application.

The only component I was unable to get to work was the application widget, sams android application development, even with their source code. I'm sure I'll work out the issue but that was the only hiccup I had in the book. Jan 27, Caroline Gordon rated it liked it Shelves: non-fictionsoftware-development. This book has got me going on Java and Android but I do have some reservations about how it was presented. I think it depends what kind of learner you are and your technical background too.

I would have preferred a much more simple application but with allot more information about the structure of the Android platform itself. I have to admit the Java was pretty much assumed knowledge so you'll need to read some Java books too if that is an issue. The 24 hours is an interesting approach, sams android application development. I starte This book has got me going on Java and Android but I do have some reservations about how it was presented. I started doing all the exercises in each chapter myself and learning Java, Eclipse and so on at the same time.

Each chapter was then taking much more than 1 hour. I streamlined this to playing with some of the code, then downloading the sample code and working through most of the chapter refering to that. The next chapter, start on last chapter's sams android application development but then quickly move on to just downloading and reviewing what they did. I'm going to read the official Android site next, while playing around with some apps from github.

On the plus side they did work right through to a server connected app, and even have a running server for testing. So all the building blocks are there for most sams android application development you will want to do for 'simple' apps.

Have to admit I will likely be avoiding "in X hours" books in future. I prefer to learn from a very broad base of information instead of getting details thrown at me with very little context. Oct 14, Frank rated it liked it. Surprisingly good, especially if you ignore the hours gimmick. I got this book because 'Beginning Android 2' doesn't include Eclipse development and that's the platform I'm using.

Before reading this one I had no clue about Eclipse's debugging view, which is simply wonderful. This book makes a nice compliment to BA2 and it seems more targeted to the 2. Good color screenshots if you need hand-holding during the initial Eclipse learning curve.
